A Coincidence of Science or a Sign of Grace?

Just outside Mombasa, Kenya, lies the famous shrine of Seyyid Baghali, a revered Sufi saint who served as a foreman during the construction of the Uganda Railway at the turn of the 20th century. Legend has it that his spiritual presence was so profound that heavy vessels of cement would float inches above his head as he worked. For generations, travelers driving past Mackinnon Road would always slow down to pay their respects and seek blessings for a safe journey.
In the mid-1970s, a visitor traveled all the way from abroad specifically to offer his prayers at this sacred shrine, a testament to his deep and unwavering faith. Tragically, on his return journey to Mombasa, he lost his life in a severe car accident.
My father was actively involved in community funeral arrangements at the time, so I joined him at the cemetery to help with the burial. Together, my father and I stepped down into the six-foot dugout grave to receive the deceased, carefully laying his body to rest at the bottom, while others stood at the edge above us assisting with the process. The sky was completely clear and cloudless. Yet, the exact moment we finalized laying the body to rest, a sudden downpour opened up directly over us.
It rained heavily for just about one minute. After completing our work inside, we climbed out of the grave, soaked through. Once the burial was finished, we walked over to our car, which was parked merely ten meters away. To our absolute astonishment, the car and the ground around it were bone dry. In fact, those standing just a few feet away from the grave hadn't felt a single drop. They were completely dry, looking on in total disbelief. That sudden rain cloud had focused itself exclusively on the handful of us positioned right at the grave, leaving everyone else witnessing an undeniable anomaly.
As a scientist, this mystery has stayed with me ever since, raising questions that bridge the physical and the spiritual.
Was it simply a statistical coincidence, I wondered, such as an extremely rare, micro-localized atmospheric anomaly? Given the tiny radius, the odds would have had to be nearly impossible.
Or perhaps it could have been a cosmic salutation? In many traditions, water is poured on a grave as a final symbolic farewell, marking the dissolution of a life returning to its source.
Another explanation was that this rain may have been a divine acceptance of his prayers. It felt comforting to think of the rain shower as being a direct response to the unspoken intentions he had offered at the mausoleum just moments before his passing.
Or, looking through a scientific lens, had I witnessed some sort of a quantum-level event? What if localized particles had resonated in that precise moment to draw moisture straight from the surrounding air?
Perhaps this experience was simply offering us a quiet reminder that life holds mysteries far deeper than our current understanding can reach.
I leave this story with you today for your own quiet reflection. Which of these thoughts, if any, resonates most deeply with your heart?©️ Amyn Dahya
